Rabbi Dan Dorsch

As I watched the star-studded Saturday Night Seder on Youtube, I couldn’t help but think of the Oscars from a few years ago. Upon accepting his Oscar, Benj Pasek, one of the writers of Dear Even Hansen and one of the producers of the Broadway Seder, got up and thanked his mom for letting him bail out of JCC league soccer to be in a musical (https://www.wrti.org/post/who-mom-who-encouraged-her-son-sing-rain).

At the time, like a lot of American Jews, I had a good laugh. I then went into my box of childhood photos and miraculously procured a photo of Josh Pasek (Benj’s older brother) and I in our JCC league soccer uniforms from the early 1990s. Today, Josh is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan. I am a happy rabbi serving a successful congregation. So I scanned the photo and sent it to my father--who works with Jeff Pasek, Benj and Josh’s father--and told him to relay the message that some of us managed to stick with JCC league soccer and still did pretty well for ourselves too.

Needless to say, I am sure Benj’s family is kvelling. His crew has raised over a quarter of a million dollars thus far for the CDC foundation, and inspired those of us who are stranded at home with some entertaining, original Jewish programming. I think instead of having my children recite the Four Questions, I am going to begin a new tradition and play the video of Idina Menzel singing them instead.
