pride and the Middle east

Shalom Lewis, Rabbi Emeritus

I love when self-righteous piety gets exposed as moral idiocy and bigotry.

What is the only country in the Middle East that has gay pride parades? Gay bars? Gay neighborhoods? Gay celebrities? Gay rights? The obvious answer is, of course, Israel. And yet, many in the progressive LGBTQ community despise Israel, discriminating against her, celebrating the Palestinian state.

It gets juicer. The following news item recently appeared in the media…'The Palestinian Authority has banned members of the Palestinian Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer community from carrying out any activities in the West Bank. The ban came after the grassroots group Al-Qaws for Sexual and Gender Diversity in Palestinian Society was planning to hold a gathering for its members in Nablus at the end of the month. The group operates both in the West Bank and among Arab Israelis. Its offices are only in East Jerusalem and Haifa…’

And what do we hear from the progressives? The champions of the down trodden? The preachers of intersectionality? Not a word. Not a whisper. Israel remains vilified and the Palestinian flag is proudly waved at LGBTQ events. Kafka could write a masterpiece on the maddening, sanctimonious hatred of the Left. Sadly, there appears no urgency for politically incorrect reportage.

The insanity of this hypocrisy is infuriating and mystifying, but the Left doesn’t care. Facts and reason are of no concern. The absurdity is transparent yet ignored. So, I’m thinking, how about a Gay Pride Parade in downtown Ramallah with Mahmoud Abbas as the Grand Marshall? How about outlandish marchers and drag queens waving rainbow colored Palestinian flags chanting ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free’.

Now that would be a fun afternoon.
