A Question to Ponder

Shalom Lewis, Rabbi Emeritus

A question to ponder. (Think the final fairy tale scene in Tarantino's "Inglorious Basterds"). If the entire Nazi leadership were gathered in one place. If Hitler and Eichmann, Heydrich and Goebbels, Goering and Himmler…If all the savages who ran the Third Reich were in the Reichstag Heil Hitlering, planning the destruction of the West, would we evaluate, deliberate, hesitate or would we drop one massive explosive device and wipe out the barbarians? We know the answer… then.

The Greatest Generation would drop a bomb, with not a qualm, in the blink of a righteous eye. And yet, when vast numbers of murdering terrorists gather in one place today. Marching. Mourning. Rallying. Raging. Hating. Plotting. We evaluate, deliberate, hesitate. We fear the consequences of bold action. The criticism. The media assault. The retaliatory threats. The U.N. censures. The condemnation by our home-grown useful idiots.

We are strangling ourselves with moral timidity and inexcusable cowardice. In World War Two, we utterly destroyed the Third Reich and Imperial Japan. That is why there was peace. We did not negotiate D-Day nor Hiroshima. Evil was recognized. Confronted and crushed. When pondering what to do today, I suggest we insert Nazi for ISIS, Hamas, Hezbollah, Al Shabaab, Al Qaeda, Islamic Jihad, Taliban, Boko Haram, Quds Force for some clarity.

Today, the Devil is no different, but sadly we are.
