Knowing the Answers

In the aftermath of the various quiz show scandals in the 1960s, in which contestants were fed answers in advance of the show to placate sponsors’ desires for higher ratings–Merv Griffin‘s wife was sitting next to him on an airplane.  She told him, “We should make a new quiz show.” He replied: “Why would we want another quiz show?”

She continued by saying: “It’s a quiz show where we’re going to give all the people the answers!”

Immediately, he jumped in and said: “You can’t do that, all of those folks got into trouble!”

She said, “Wait!  We’ll give them the answers…but the contestants need to come up with the questions.”

Jeopardy has been on the air since 1964.  Sixty-one years later, it continues to be a beautiful metaphor for life.

We look out at the world.  All the answers that we need are everywhere we look in this world that God created.

The challenge is whether we have the wherewithal to look deep into ourselves to ask the hard questions.  It’s by asking questions that we are able to discover what life is really all about.
