These Volunteers Really Shine!

When Maxine and Jonathan Schein moved to Atlanta more than 20 years ago, they didn’t reveal much about their busy volunteer life back in New Jersey. After all, the Scheins were near retirement and thought it might be nice to kick back a bit. Maxine, a former teacher, and Jonathan, an educator and administrator, had moved to Atlanta to be near family. Their period of lying low didn’t last long, however. Both took on part-time jobs and, thanks to a friend from synagogue, they learned about Second Helpings Atlanta. The work of rescuing and delivering surplus food was “right up their alley,” explains Maxine. Both are in their 70s, with lots of energy and a strong commitment to helping others. As substitute SHA drivers, the Scheins jump into action when regular route drivers cannot serve. Together and separately they drive routes all over the city, sometimes several per week. “It pains me when I see people throw out food, knowing it can go to good use,” explains Jonathan. “I’m so happy when I can deliver 500 or 600 pounds to an agency.
